Is Exposure Damaging Magic?

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

The greatest enemy of the magician is exposure.

Such a simple act of “It’s in your other hand” or “You switched the cards” can bring a top performance to an anticlimactic end.

You’d think then, that ‘instruction’ videos constructed by mischevious 13 year olds who barely know how to hold a deck of cards could damage magic beyond repair.

The world famous video sharing website, Youtube, has hundreds of such videos. Their grainy, shaky frames exposing the secrets behind a shocking amount of card tricks which normally cost upwards of £20 each.

So Why do magicians still buy magic tricks, when they can find out the ’secret’ for free?

Well, as all good magicians know, there’s a whole lot more to a magic trick than it’s workings. As these squeaky pubescent amateur meddlers show in theirweak videos, the physical moves alone don’t make for an entertaining performance. There is so much more to magic than tricking people.

The exception to this rule perhaps is the occasional ’street magician’ who makes it to TV such as Dynamo. He can’t put a sentence together, never mind a performance. His ’success’ is more to do with marketing, and a ‘hip-hip’ selling point than competence as a magician, but that’s irrelevant.

Back to the point, when you buy a magic DVD, you get a range of routines taught by an experienced, competent magician.  You get bonus handlings etc.

Any magician worth his salt wants to improve his routine and polish it to it’s finest, not learn 50-odd tricks and half-perform them.

The other argument many might have is “Won’t laypeople go on the internet and find out how tricks are done?”

The simple answer to this question is how many laypeople do you actually know who have done this? Anyone?

The Vortex PK Pro Ring

Monday, September 17th, 2007

I’ve been using this nifty little ring for a couple of months now, and I’m very happy with it.

I’ve used other PK rings before with varying degrees of success. The first problem I had with my previous PK ring (A very popular brand, might I add) is that I got it wet and the colour came off! I was pretty shocked that this was not even mentioned on the product page of the website or even in the instructions, especially considering what I’d paid for it.

Also, my previous PK ring had square edges, which made it stand out a mile off, It’d draw less attention if it was bright green. In fact, after I’d got it wet, it was!

Enter the Vortex PK Pro Ring.

I don’t really know where to start with this PK ring. It’s beatifully crafted, smooth like a proper wedding ring. It’s a warm, gold colour, which evidently is immune to the occasional splash of water. After about 2 month, this ring still looks like new. I’d seen lots of hype about this PK ring on the internet and thought it was just that; hype. However, after using it exhaustively myself, I have seen the light, and won’t be changing back!

Despite this ring being quite sleek and not bulky in the slightest, it packs quite a punch in terms of magnet strength. It can move small objects from a fair few inches away. I compared the strength to my old PK ring and it performs slightly better.

It looks like the new ring on the block, the Vortex PK Pro Ring, beats rival PK rings hands down. If you know what’s good for you, you’ll make the smart choice and scrap that bulky heap of cr*p and upgrade. It’ll be the smartest choice you have ever made. I guarantee it!

Famous actress and former baywatch babe Pamela Anderson has overcome her fear of heights- by peroforming a levitation illusion!

The big busted beauty was nervous about performing a levitation illusion on stage in Las Vegas, where she is the assistant of stage magician Hans Klok, but repeatedly performing the act has helped her overcome her crippling phobia.

“I levitate to the ceiling and I’m afraid of heights. “The first time I was levitating I actually had tears in my eyes. I was really excited.”

Now I wonder why The Web won’t cure my girlfriends phobia of spiders…

Sword Illusion Goes Horribly Wrong

Princess Tenko

Japanese illusionist, Princess Tenko, suffered serious injuries when an illusion went wrong.

Princess Tenko was trapped in a box with 10 metal swords, breaking several ribs and her right cheek during a performance in the Japanese city of Sabae.

According to her manager, one of the swords “would have been stuck in her right eye if it were one centimetre higher”. He also stated that it will take months for the wounds to heal.

Princess Tenko is hugely famous across Asia and North America, frequently performing in Las Vegas.

The trick being performed was called ‘The spike illusion in the face of death’, and required her to escape the moment after the swords were driven into the box, but tragically something went wrong and she was pinned inside by the swords.

Remarkably, the star continued her show for another 20 minutes before it was called off.

“She is suffering tremendous pain but is more shocked that she had to call off performances,” said her manager.

Another funny parody of David Blaine. The poor guy doesn’t get a break, does he?!
This video reminds me of all the thousands on ellusionist-bred blaine-ites who run around showing off their latest street magic gimmicks.
